My laptop has suddenly stopped detecting my headphones and microphone?

I'm plugging in my headphones and microphone but the laptop is still playing music out of its speakers and not picking up the mic (despite it being audible through the speakers). Is there any settings I need to adjust in windows. I am using XP Home edition. Thanks, Kez
